Tories: outsiders at their own conference?
A quick voice note from me about the strange mood at Tory conference
I’ve spent the last few days at Tory Party Conference. Paid subscribers can listen to my thoughts below.
I am usually an outsider here, but the strange thing this time around was that so many paid up members of the Conservative Party also clearly feel like outsiders. In the wake of the last few weeks, this feels like a Party that could easily split - few people seem to know what the Tories stand for. What unites the Red Wall voters that Boris Johnson won over with the free-marketeer Tories now in charge with Liz Truss?
Of course, this is why our Battle of Ideas festival this year is so crucial. We’ll be looking at whether British politics is due a major realignment - or whether people are increasingly politically homeless. We’ll also be looking at why the major ‘isms’ and ideologies of our time seem so incoherent and unhelpful.
