Claire Fox asks the minister why the government is seeking to introduce further laws against protest, when the police don’t seem able to enforce those we already have. ‘Bans on face coverings and the like seems a distraction, and a political underestimation of the deep culture of anti-Semitism, which has often gone unchallenged’.

Debating Matters: sixth-form students from four schools from across the UK will battle it out for the title of Debating Matters House of Lords Champions 2024 in a day of debate presented in partnership with House of Lords Communications on Friday 15 March.

The East Midlands Salon exists to promote open, public debate. The idea of a Salon was developed in 17th and 18th Century France, and was central to the intellectual ferment of the end of 18th Century. They were the scenes of excitement, outrage, and the shock of the new in a time when ‘the new’ still seemed possible. The East Midlands Salon is organised in homage to those days.

Is civilisation itself under attack? From wars in Ukraine or Israel to a culture war against foundational western values, some commentators suggest that we face not just a political battle over which direction to take, but a fundamental battle over civilisation as such. The Academy will bring together people from all walks of life who are committed to rethinking some of the basic building blocks of political life. This year, we will look at what civilisation is, whether it is under threat, why it might be worth defending.
